Born in 1979, Desta Mahdere (Papi) worked and lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He developed a passion for art and creativity at an early age, and what had first started off as a hobby soon shaped his personality and life. Driven to become an artist, he joined the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts and Design for a two-year fine arts certification program in 2000. Attending the program exposed him to the arts and creative community in Addis Ababa, and shaped his creative thinking and practice.

For eighteen years, Desta has worked as a Graphic Designer, Art Director, and Creative Director, exploring the possibilities of his creative practice by working on different commercial and non-commercial projects. He was the Founder of Designlab, a Creative Agency engaged in concept development, branding, and creative design.

Desta was also a self-taught photographer who, in his work, uses graphic design techniques to create images that at once evoke a sense of newness and nostalgia. For him, art is a basic human desire—it entices us to open our minds and makes us want more by reinventing our imagination and reality.
